Hogs Head Bar, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, Orlando

7/03/2010

Butterbeer was on the list of treats to try at Harry Potter, but when Neil and Lauren saw the long lines at the butterbeer cart

they decided to check out the Hog Head Bar. They found shorter lines that moved quickly and a nice cool respite from the heat.

They ordered both the frozen ($3.99) and the regular ($2.99) butterbeer, and both preferred the frozen variety (left).

Despite the name, butterbeer is a non-alcoholic drink. The frozen butterbeer has the consistency of an icee slush swirled with melting ice cream. The flavor is sort of like cream soda with butterscotch flavoring. It's really, really, really sweet and would probably be best shared - toward the end of the drink, it was just too sweet to finish.

Overall rating: Really unique drink; a must-try

Honeydukes, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, Orlando

7/03/2010

Lauren and Neil spent the morning at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Their first treat stop was Honeydukes. Honeydukes is a re-creation of the sweets shop from the novels. They have a wide variety of candy and treats, from chocolate frogs and peppermint toads to treacle fudge and fizzing whizzbees.

They chose to try the cauldron cake ($3.95).

The cauldron cake is described as a chocolate chip muffin dipped in chocolate and topped with chocolate whipped topping. This was a winner. It was really sweet, gooey, and chocolatey (and did get a bit messy - get lots of napkins). The chocolate whipped topping was really thick, more like a mousse. If you have a sweet tooth or are a chocoholic, you will enjoy this treat.

Overall rating: Excellent

Emeril's Tchoup Chop, Royal Pacific Resort, Orlando

7/02/2010

We were staying at the Royal Pacific Resort, part of Universal Studios Florida, so Emeril's Tchoup Chop was a convenient choice for dinner. I called at 4 pm to see if we could get a reservation for 6:30. The only availability was either 5:00 or after 8:30. We took the 5:00 opening.

The restaurant, located on the ground level of the Royal Pacific hotel, is a beautiful, contemporary space with glass flower chandeliers, a bar at one end with floor to ceiling shelves, and a serene water feature through the center of the restaurant. We waited only minutes for our table. There were only a handful of tables occupied during our meal, presumably due to the early hour.

The menu features Asian/Pacific flavors. A waitress took our drink orders, which were brought out promptly, along with complimentary shrimp crisps and a slightly spicy aioli. They were warm and crispy with a mild shrimp flavor, but the aioli gave them a nice punch.

The waitress took our order then spent much of the rest of our visit chatting with the girl checking guests in at the podium. which was almost directly beside our table, and unfortunately we could overhear much of their conversation, which did spoil the ambience.

After a relatively long wait of almost 40 minutes, considering the emptiness of the restaurant, three waiters arrived with our entrees. Neil ordered the salmon filet with ginger butter sauce (on the side) and vegetables ($23).

He eats a lot of salmon and knows how a good filet should be cooked, and this one was nicely prepared. He liked the vegetables as well. They had a nice consistency and everything was piping hot.

Lauren decided to try the pork tenderloin with lo mein ($22).

I was a bit surprised at her choice. She is usually a fish, chicken, or steak eater, but she does love lo mein noodles, and I guess that's what drove here choice here. She found the pork flavorful and very tender and the lo mein was a hit, too. It was a big portion of meat and she could not finish it all.

I had the scallops with risotto and broccolini ($27).

This dish was made for me! I love risotto, and scallops are my very favorite. I order them pretty much any time they are on the menu. This dish did not disappoint. The scallops were nicely cooked - still soft and buttery. Scallops can quickly go from cooked just right to overcooked and rubbery, so I appreciated the attention in preparing them. The risotto, which also can be a challenge to prepare properly because the dish can quickly go from too watery to a lump of mush, was perfect as well. The combination of flavors between the scallops, risotto, and broccolini was wonderful. I would definitely order this again.

Overall rating: Beautiful restaurant and tasty, well-prepared dishes

Would you return: Yes, especially for the scallops!

Ben and Jerry's, Universal Studios Florida

7/02/2010

Neil and Lauren stopped for a snack at Ben and Jerry's ice cream parlor, located on the streets of New York in Universal Studios. This scoop shop is no different than the other Ben and Jerry's around the country, but we enjoy the creamy ice cream and other tasty treats that they offer.

Neil ordered a Berry Nice smoothie: Berry Berry Extraordinary Sorbet blended with blueberry-pomegranate juice, strawberries, and banana ($5.79). He loved this. It was sweet and tart, cool and refreshing with a thick, creamy consistency. He chose this over ice cream because it was a healthier offering with the sorbet and fresh fruit.

Lauren had a waffle cone with two scoops of Ben and Jerry's premium ice cream ($4.99): cake batter and cookie dough. Not a combo I would choose, but she thought it was delicious! The cake batter ice cream is yellow cake batter with a chocolate frosting swirl. The cookie dough is vanilla ice cream with lots of chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough.

Although she enjoyed the tasty concoction, it got messy quickly as it melted in the hot Florida sunshine.

Overall rating: Tasty, high-quality frozen treats

Would you return: Yes!

Sbarro, Belz Factory Outlet

7/02/2010

While Neil and Lauren were at Universal, I was bargain hunting at Orlando Premium Outlets nearby on International Drive. I wanted something quick and simple so I stopped in the food court, which featured choices like China Max, Subway, and Japan Cafe Grill. The pizza at Sbarro looked good, so I had a slice of supreme pizza ($3.99) and a regular Sierra Mist ($1.99). The pizza was good as far as Sbarro goes with a lot of flavor in the toppings like Italian sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, onions, and peppers. Good enough for a quick slice.

Overall rating: Tasty and quick for a chain-style slice.

Would you return: Yes, if I was in the mood for pizza.

Louie's Italian, Universal Studios Florida

7/2/2010

Neil (husband) and Lauren (daughter) spent the day at Universal Studios. They found themselves hungry around 1:00. Louie's was nearby and the line was short, so they stopped for a quick bite.

Louie's can be found on the New York set at the theme park. This restaurant features quick casual Italian fare, such as pizza by the slice, fettuccini, spaghetti and meatballs, and salads.

Lauren chose the fettuccini Alfredo and  breadstick for $6.99 and a PowerAde for $2.89.

The portion size was just right for lunch. The sauce was a nice creamy consistency and the pasta was cooked al dente, but the flavor was too bland. Lauren compared it to a Fazoli's fast casual sort of pasta dish - okay for a quick filling meal but very average in flavor. The breadstick was not warm and the texture indicated it had been sitting around for a while.

Neil ordered a slice of vegetable pizza and Caesar salad side for $7.19 and a 22 oz diet Coke for $2.59.

He found the pizza to be really tasty and fresh with a nice thin, slightly crispy crust. The vegetables on top were really chunky and fresh-tasting. The salad was pretty plain but the greens were crisp and the dressing was nice and tangy.

The restaurant itself was crowded since it was prime time for lunch. Although the lines for ordering moved quickly, they had to wait a few minutes for a table to open up. There is outdoor seating outside next to the lagoon, but on a hot, humid day most people want to eat indoors.

Overall rating: Okay for a quick and filling lunch, but nothing special.

Would you return: Maybe, if hungry and in the vicinity, but we wouldn't make a plan to eat here.
